Real Madrid, Sevilla Mourn Gambia’s Legend Biri Biri Njie

Real Madrid and FC Sevilla have joined Gambians in their mourning of legendary former footballer Biri Biri Njie.

The former Wallidan player died today in a hospital in Dakar following a “mild illness”.

The first Gambian to ply his trade abroad, Biri died aged 72 and has two sons who are also Gambia internationals in Yusupha Njie playing for Boavista in the Portuguese league and Tijan Jaiteh.

A revered right winger during his days, Biri was born in the capital Banjul 30th March 19, 1948.

In the wake of his demise, Real Madrid and Sevillepaid respects to Biri on their respective sites .

His playing days dates from his time at Black Star Football, Black Diamonds, White Panthoms, Arrance FC then Mighty Blackpool between 1963–1965.

However his career really took off with Augustians between 1965–1970 before moving to English side Derby County in 1970 prior to his return to Wallidan the same year having failed to get playing time there.

His return to First Division side Wallidan earned him a luck to play Danish side B 1901 who were in The Gambia for pre-season.

Biri impressed enough scoring a hat-trick as the side signed him up before leaving for Sevilla FC. It was at Sevilla that he attained legendary status scoring thirty-two goals in 99 appearances before returning to Denmark and returning to Gambia in 1986.
