A Gambian security personnel has given insight into how former president Yaya Jammeh’s hit squad stormed death row inmates for summarily executions.
A notorious unit, most of whom commandos detailed to kill Jammeh’s political foes, the jungulers have long sent shivers down spines of Gambians since time of their formation in 2004.
Trained by an Italian mafia christened Francesco, full operations of the unit, also at one point dubbed Black, Black, came to light last year after its members confessed to killings before the TRRC.
Suffocating victims using plastics bags, they also hacked or chopped to pieces their targets including executions by AK47s and dumping their bodies in a well in Kanilai and in the Fonis.
And giving a run down of how they appeared at the Mile Two Prison where their would-victims were detained and killed purportedly on Jammeh’s directives, a guard at the facility said the jungulers were a frightening lot.
“These jungulers when they’re coming they come very unfriendly. You never know in those days where “the top” gets information. Everybody was scared and very careful and these people (the jungulers( when they’re coming they’re armed and for us as prison officers we are not armed. They could take anyone (prisoners) they wanted without resistance,” Lamin Sowe, a prison officer at Mile II told commissioners of the TRRC today.
