“I Don’t Think You Should Allow Him to Waste Our Time,”: Bundungkakunda Lawmaker Tears into Colleague In Debate over Covid Emergency

An interesting turn of events occurred this evening as Gambian lawmakers launched into each other in the debate over whether to prolong the current state of emergency triggered by the pandemic.

The little spat began mid-way in to Bundungkakunda legislator Bakary Njie’s deliberations who was against extension of the emergency.

However, Lower Niumi’s parliamentarian Sheriff Hydara saw matters differently and waved for a standing order aimed at countering his colleague.

In the lead up to this, member of Lower Badibou Alhagie Jawara had tried interjecting apparently angered by Njie’s claim some parliamentarians doubt covid-19 exist in The Gambia.

Njie charged at Jawara saying, “Honourble speaker do not allow him to waste our time,” to which member of lower Niumi fired back for his fellow UDP MP, rebuking: “No member should impede on another member. The language he used against the member for lower Badibou is improper!”

At this point, the deputy speaker of the house Momodou LK Sanneh asked the Bundungkakunda lawmaker to fire on, telling him: ” Please do not respond to any other member.”

Following the exchanges, Sanneh, stepping in for Mariama Denton as speaker, admonished: ” Please honourable members standing order 321 no member except the speaker shall stop a member during their deliberation except the speaker. Please let’s respect that.”

Session on the aforesaid subject resume in the next sitting.
