Avid blogger Nyang Njie has quashed reports suggesting he has married a second-wife.
The rumour was started by KerrFatou’s Fatou Touray before Gunjur Online picked it and ran it as a story, piecing pictures of Oley Damel Faal and Njang Njie.
Soon the story went viral amid endless congratulatory messages to the duo.
The news that was prank-intended, was apparently taken out of context prompted Nyang Njie into issuing a rebuttal, questioning the credentials of the Gunjur Online.
“Journalism has ethics and code of conduct. The first rule of reporting is to verify source and veracity of a story. Gambian journalism has a long way to go as tabloid and sensationalism are the norm in our neck of the woods. We rely on media houses for good information. #Gunjur_Online failed on their duty of care to their esteemed readers. Let us raise the bar in reporting. The Wollofs are fond of saying “Daygaa tale neh cas bii touch naa”,” Nyang said of his fake marriage with KerrFatou mate Oley.
Fatou Touray who began the saga later came out to clarify her motive for the fake story saying it was a prank.
“They are actually cousins but Nyang had always joked about marrying her so I pieced this up to stir up a prank,” she said.
