“Baba Jobe Discussed with Yaya Jammeh in Detention to Overthrow Jawara”

Baba Jobe discussed plans to leapfrog Dawda Jawara’s regime, a commission is told.

A former student leader in Libya, the late Jobe was murdered in 2011 despite completing his jail term over economic charges.

The TRRC, a commission probing violations under Jammeh’s era in previous sittings heard how the former majority leader of parliament was poisoned in his cell and rushed to hospital where government hit-men strangled him to death.

And now hearing the late businessman wife’s account of events today, commissioners of the sitting are told Jammeh discussed plans to unseat Jawara with Baba Jobe.

“During the Jawara regime, Baba used to be arrested when he returned from Libya on terrorism allegations. It was the likes of Yaya Jammeh who arrested him. But Baba told me Jammeh used to discuss plans to unseat Jawara with him while he was in detention when all guards were a slept,” Tida Jobe, wife of the Karantaba-born businessman said.

Junta members toppled Jawara’s regime in a coup executed by Sana B. Sabally and Edward Singhatey in 1994 leading to the installation of Jammeh as chairman on default of seniority despite reports he wanted to chicken out of the plot.

Sitting continues.
