A Gambia top soldier has offered his apologies to veteran politician OJ for mutilating his eye.
Captain Bubacarr Bah, trained in Turkey over weapon use, confessed to torturing OJ in 1996 who was detained on the orders of Junta members.
OJ, was one of Jawara government’s ministers rounded up by the AFPRC and paraded on grounds of corruption and pillaging the nation’s coffers.
OJ, for his part, was nabbed 19 times during the course of the two decades Jammeh has been at the nation’s managerial hot-seat.
For his fire-brand activism and accusations of the regime of dictatorship, the PPP stalwart turned the subject of torture by the then government.
Recounting how he was tortured, OJ said he was detained at a military camp along with other notable former government figures – a period he was tortured, forced to lie on trampoline for a bed and denied bath for close to one year.
Bah was one of soldiers who tortured Jallow using barbwire which, in his narrative, were readily available from behind the military camp.
The two -perpetrator and victim -met for the first time today -as part of process of healing the nation of atrocities committed in the past under Jammeh’s rein.
“I was young, energetic but misguided. There was lot of misinformation about him (OJ) and the situation around that time, I did not use my mind to verify whether it was true or not. But once again I want to apologise to him and I want him to forgive me from the bottom of his heart,” he said.
